50th Annual Rosey Awards: Wednesday, November 7 @ 5:30pm at the Gerding Theater in the Portland Armory

On November 7th, 2007, The Portland Advertising Federation (PAF) is hosting the 50th annual Rosey Awards. This exclusive show celebrates some of the most kick &@! advertising work in the Northwest. Staying true to the the community mantra, “Keep Portland Weird“, is one thing we can count on from some of the big player’s in town.

The PAF and The Art Institute of Portland gallery have joined forces this year & will be featuring the award winning work exclusively from November 8-28.

September 19th, 2007: AIGA Portland – Urban Forest Project Celebration

The Urban Forest Project brings the community together to celebrate collaboration, problem-solving, and sustainable design and business choices during the week of Earth Day. This year, the initiative will culminate in a celebration of this year’s work on the project, at the yearly AIGA Portland gala social event.

What is it?

AIGA’s SOCIO XV / Celebration Gala

AIGA’s SOCIO XV is two events in one: a celebration of the AIGA’s (Portland chapter) work with the Urban Forest Project AND our yearly gala social event. Banners created for the Urban Forest Project by local AIGA members will be shown in reincarnated form, as limited-edition bags that have been beautifully recycled by local artisans at Queen Bee Creations. Attend SOCIO XV on September 19th for an exclusive first chance to snap up the beautiful bags, get inspired, and celebrate sustainable, local design with friends and colleagues. Picasso’s Girl with a Mandolin comes to life, but is it Still Art?

I randomly came across this video created & produced by Michael Taveraz. Picasso’s Girl with a Mandolin comes to life. The original is an oil on canvas, 1910. Work from this time period is considered analytical cubism because the work showed the breaking down, or analysis, of form. The different planes give the appearance of lifting up & off the canvas, rather than descending down, creating a vanishing point.

This video captures the transcendence of a traditional medium (oil painting) into a modern day medium (video). Is this still considered art? Some would argue that the viewer looses the intended experience by manipulating the vehicle by which the message is delivered. Others argue that it’s a natural evolution. Just like everything else, people, culture, art, society, etc., will continue to evolve due to emerging technologies. Either way, it’s an amazing video.

Smallest Works of Art

Willard Wigan is the creator of the smallest works of art in the world. He was humiliated as a child, due to his severe dyslexia and to this day he still can’t read or write well. Told on numerous occasions that he would amount to nothing, Willard retreated to a world where his work could not be seen and therefore could not be criticised.

He began building small homes for ants and insects, eventually developing an ability to sculpt things only viewable under a microscope. To create his works, Willard developed a method of placing himself into a meditative state, slowing his heartbeat, sculpting between beats, in the knowledge that the mere pulse in his finger could destroy his work.

Urban Graffiti

Today was full of inspiration. Spent the day along Hwy 30, taking photos of trains & graffiti.

Marian Bantjes

I just discovered this amazing graphic designer & typographer – Marian Bantjes. Her work is so precise, yet organic at the same time. She’ll be speaking at TypeCon Aug 1–5, in Seattle. She’s featured in the July 2007 CA Illustration Annual. Good interview & write up.

New Inspiration

The BIG 30 is rapidly approaching – July 29th to be exact. For the most part, I’m super excited. I’ve accomplished so much in a short amount of time. In the past couple of years, I’ve really grown into my own skin and damn it, it feels good.

I got an interesting envelope in the mail today from a sender I didn’t recognize. A birthday gift from my sister, sent to me by an artist by the name of Kristin Brenneman. It’ an original painting, oil on canvas, titled “Swooping glints, across noon and after“. WOW! This has to be the best birthday gift I’ve ever received. Kristin does some amazing work; ranging painting to sculpture to jewelry and also teaches workshops.

Festival of Fire

The Fire Arts Festival, held July 11 to 14 in Oakland, California, showcased the work of more than 400 artists, actors and sculptors whose medium of choice is flame. Take a look at these amazing photos.

Um, yeah…I like books

On our last day in Miami Beach, we visited the Wolfsonian Museum (also known as Florida International University). They had an amazing collection of design books, ranging from architecture, to graphic design & film. We picked up The Design of Dissent by Milton Glaser and Mirko Ilic. Powerful stuff. We could’ve spent the entire day inside their cafe drinking espresso & reading books. Ah, we’re such goobers for good design…
